Right at Home Carer of the Year 2020

This year, we have been delighted to hold the first ever Right at Home Ireland Carer of the Year Awards. We created the awards to acknowledge the work and commitment of our care staff to both our clients and their colleagues.

We have been thinking about introducing such an initiative for some time and this year more than ever than ever before, we believe it is important to recognise those who go above and beyond for the people they care for and support to live independent lives at home.

As a company, we are so proud of the kindness and generosity of spirit that all in our care team show every single day. This year and in years to come, the Carer of the Year Awards will recognise those who go the extra mile with humour, kindness and a personal touch.

Right at Home Carer of the Year 2020

We are absolutely delighted to announce Sabrina Boyd, from Cork City and carer with the Cork branch as Right at Home Ireland Carer of the Year 2020!

Sabrina was announced as the winner at an online awards ceremony on Sunday, 20th September. Managing Director of the Cork office, Cian O’Sullivan presented Sabrina with her award, extending congratulations and gratitude on behalf of Right at Home Ireland.

Speaking about why Sabrina has been selected as the national winner, Cian O’Sullivan said: “When Sabrina’s client, Betty, and her daughter Olive nominated Sabrina they told us that she was ‘a joy to see arriving in the morning’ and I think our whole team here in Cork would echo that.

“Sabrina’s cheerful attitude, reliability and integrity are traits that endear her to all her clients, and she is never fazed by whatever her day-to-day work throws at her. Throughout it all she demonstrates the kindness, compassion, and respect we value so dearly at Right at Home.”

Sabrina added that: “I couldn’t believe it! I was delighted when I was named as the regional winner, to have my work recognised in that way, and now to win the overall award – I just never expected it!

“I love my work and it means so much to me, having come to caring later in my career, that what I do means so much to my clients and their families.  It has been such a strange and difficult year for so many of us, I’m glad that I’ve been able to continue putting a smile on the faces of those I care for throughout it all.”

Sabrina was presented with a Dublin Crystal trophy and €500.00 One4All voucher, speaking about the online awards event, she said: “I suppose we’re so used to everything being online now and it was lovely to be able to have so many family log in to watch the event too and to see them over the screen. If it had been a physical event somewhere, they might not have been able to attend at all.”

Regional Winners

The awards covered all areas in which we work in Ireland, including Dublin North, Dublin South & Wicklow, Kildare, Cork and Galway. There were five regional winners, who then went through as nominees for the overall national winner.

The only difficulty we had throughout the selection process was picking just five regional winners and a national winner. Following tough deliberation, we choose our five, wonderful regional winners from across Ireland, which included Sabrina:

North Dublin Carer of the Year Award – Helena McGuigan

Helena has been chosen as North Dublin Carer of the Year because of her absolute commitment to caring for those who need support. From the beginning, Helena has travelled far beyond her designated area to care for clients who need support. Clients and their families immediately connect with Helena because of her kind, compassionate manner and sense of humour. We have frequently had clients contact the office simply to let us know how happy they are with her.

Helena is eager to learn and will always be the first to volunteer for training, such is her commitment to provide the best level of care to her clients. We are delighted to have Helena as a member of the team and even more so to present her with this award as recognition of her contribution to her clients and to Right at Home.

South Dublin & Wicklow – Francisco Carillo

The nominations received for Francisco spoke of his kindness, respect, and his wonderful way with the people he cares for, always having their comfort and dignity at the forefront of his mind. Francisco has been chosen as the winner of the South Dublin & Wicklow Carer of the Year award because he goes above and beyond for his clients, who only have great things to say about him.

Francisco has been working throughout the pandemic assisting clients wherever they need help. He has an excellent attitude towards his work with a keen eye for detail and always goes the extra mile.

Kildare Carer of the Year – Tersia Miller

Tersia has been chosen as the winner of the Kildare Carer of the Year award because of her incredible commitment to ensuring the wellbeing of some of our most vulnerable clients. During the pandemic, Tersia took it upon herself to buy groceries for her clients, far beyond what was expected of her, and checked in on her elderly neighbours doing supermarket runs and trips to the chemist on a daily basis.

Tersia is herself 71, so in the ‘at risk’ category, yet her drive, kindness and passion for looking after others has seen her put herself on the front line. This typifies Tersia’s approach to life and to her work. We are delighted to present Tersia with this award and to recognise her huge contribution to Right at Home, her clients and to her community.

Galway Carer of the Year – Valerie IIuyemi

Valerie has been chosen as winner of Galway Carer of the Year because of her genuine, friendly manner; her ability to put people at ease; and incredible pride she takes in her role.

The empathy that she has for clients and her commitment to providing the highest level of compassionate care is really remarkable. As a client put it to us recently, ‘she is like a breath of fresh air, she is very experienced and excellent person.’ Her warm demeanour and sense of humour make her the perfect carer and we are so grateful to have her on the team her at Right at Home Galway.

We send our congratulations to each of the winners on their achievement and enormous thanks for the work they do every day in caring for our clients across Ireland.
